Howth Castle

I got off the plane groggy, with a migraine. We’d flown all night—our plane was supposed to have taken off at 7:30, but due to rain and lightning, the plane couldn’t refuel and we sat there for an hour and a half, doing nothing. And then, of course, the flight itself was just over eight and a half hours. It’s nearly impossible for me to sleep on a plane (or sleep comfortably, anyway) so I was grumpy and headachey when we deplaned.

Stepping out into the Dublin air, I was pleasantly surprised to find the sun shining. I had been under the impression (from TV, movies, social media and the latest weather forecasts) there would be no sun at all during our vacation (well, my vacation). I journeyed to Dublin with my husband, but he had to work all week; I was free to adventure out on my own each day.

We waited a bit for a cab (I recommend using your phone to book a ride if at all possible, the queue for cabs can get pretty long—and the cabs don’t run as regularly as they do at US airports), but were soon zooming across the city to our hotel. The hotel was a 30-minute ride from the airport (and a solid 30-minute walk from nearly everything we wanted to do). It was definitely aimed at the business traveler, and situated just around the corner from where my husband would be working. If you’re in town for business, the Clayton hotels are nice (but the shower was so small!), but if you’re going for vacation, I’d check out other options around the city center.

Checked in, bags dropped off, showered, time to explore the city. We used GPS to get us to St. Stephen’s Green, a place that would become one of my fast favorites in Dublin. Make sure to meander around the park not once, but several times. There’s always something new to see (statues, pigeons, dogs, swans…oh my!). The park is one of several generous green spaces in Dublin (the largest in the city proper, at 22 acres), and St. Stephen’s Green in particular was interesting to me…but I’ll get to those stories later on.
