Kicks for a Cause Announces its “One Step at a Time” Campaign

Tampa, Fl Today, Kicks for a Cause announces its “One Step at a Time” campaign. Their Executive Director, Will Shields, will walk across the state of Florida—on foot, alone, from west to east. He’ll begin the walk on November 19th and cover roughly 158 miles. The money he raises will be evenly distributed between several partner organizations.

Oftentimes, the challenges we face may seem insurmountable, but I truly believe that most of our world's largest struggles can be eased or potentially overcome with steady, forward momentum, no matter how small our steps may be. This belief is what motivates our work at KFAC and what I hope to exemplify with this walk across Florida,” said Will Shields.

Positive Impact

KFAC’s partner organizations include Zebra Coalition, Girls who Code, and Writers Cubed. Every dollar donated to the campaign will go directly to help those in need. Donations will be collected starting October 10th. [MB1] Visit KixForACause.org or @KFACTampa to learn more about this volunteer-run nonprofit as well as the partners they’re working with.

Kicks for a Cause is committed to providing great soles for great souls.

Easy Being Green

By now, you’ve heard all about the importance of unplugging. You know that leaving the phone, the computer, the TV behind and taking some well-deserved time away from technology can improve your mood, deepen your sleep, boost your brain power, and even help break the habit of reaching for mindless distractions in moments of boredom. But if you’re someone who prefers to head outside to breathe in the fresh air when you unplug you’re in for some even better news! Research shows that unplugging and taking in a bit of green at the same time is a combination that can’t be beat.

Scientists have found the positive effects from nature include decreased stress and anxiety, increased happiness and a boost in positive thinking. And a study published in the International Journal of Environmental Health Research finds you don’t even have to spend all that much time outdoors. In fact, just 20 minutes in a greenspace can improve your overall well-being. But of course, the more time you spend outside, the better. And it’s not even about exercise, just taking in some fresh air makes a huge difference.

Although, if you can incorporate a bit of exercise into your time outdoors, all the better. Sitting too long has been shown to not only increase the waistline but also take its toll on your mental health. Research shows more screen time is linked to higher rates of depression. One way to combat that? Get moving. Take it outside--into a greenspace to really reap those benefits.

In fact, there’s a program called ‘the ParkRx movement’ made up of healthcare providers, park agencies, and community organizations who encourage clients/patients/everyone to get outdoors and spend time in nature. Starting back in 2018, the NHS (the government-run hospital systems) of Scotland and Shetland began allowing doctors to write nature prescriptions, actually prescribing nature to their patients. They’ve found their Nature Prescriptions harness the benefits of the great outdoors to reduce blood pressure and anxiety while increasing happiness and overall well being.

Paint it Green

But if you can’t get outside or if you live in an area where it tends to get a bit dreary, a little paint can perk up your spirits. Just looking at the color green can have the same effects on the body and mind as heading outside. That’s because the color green is associated with nature, and it’s a refreshing, relaxing color. According to the article, ‘The benefits of being green’ by Jerald L. Schnoor, green is calming because the brain is hardwired to equate it with the outdoors. So, if you enjoy the color green, you might consider adding it to a room in your home for days when you can’t make it outside.

And when it comes to unplugging, remember, Firefox will help users get right back to what they care about whenever they’re ready. Mozilla’s new web assistant will help users unplug when it’s time to take a breath without users ever losing their place.
